10 New Year's Resolutions for Digital Nomads

Updated: Aug 14, 2023

As the new year approaches, it's time to start thinking about those resolutions we've been putting off for the past year (or maybe longer). If you're a digital nomad, your list of resolutions might look a little different than the average person's. Here are some resolution ideas for you to consider as you kick off the new year.

If everyone thinks you're sitting on the beach taking Zoom meetings all day, why not lean into that?

1. "I resolve to occasionally lean into the stereotype of being a beach bum with a laptop."

A major benefit of being a digital nomad is the ability to travel the world and work from the beach (or a cafe, or a hostel, or wherever else you can find an internet connection). But sometimes we get caught up in the idea that we have to be productive every single minute of the day, even when we're in paradise. This year, let's embrace the beach bum within and take a break every now and then to enjoy the sun and sand.

"I resolve to actually use all the co-working spaces I pay for."

We all know that feeling of excitement when we find a new co-working space in a city we're visiting, only to end up working from our hotel room or a nearby cafe every day. This year, let's make an effort to actually use those co-working spaces we're paying for and take advantage of the community, networking opportunities, and (sometimes) free coffee.

"I resolve to stop insisting I'm not a tourist."

As digital nomads, we often try to blend in with the locals and avoid looking like tourists. But let's be real: we are tourists, and that's okay! This year, let's embrace our inner tourist and take those cheesy souvenir photos, visit all the tourist attractions, and ask for recommendations from the hotel concierge. After all, we're only in this city for a limited time, so we might as well make the most of it.

"I resolve to make more digital nomad friends."

It can be lonely on the road, especially if you're traveling solo. This year, let's make an effort to connect with other digital nomads and form lasting friendships. We can join online platforms like Overlap, attend meetups and events, or simply strike up a conversation with a fellow nomad at a co-working space.

Take a break from budget travel and treat yourself to a local delicacy. Have you tried ceviche with leche de tigre?

"I resolve to satiate my inner foodie."

We often find ourselves eating whatever is cheap and convenient while on the road. But this year, let's embrace our inner foodie and seek out the best local cuisine. We can try street food, take cooking classes, or dine at local restaurants recommended by locals.

"I resolve to commit to my fitness routine on-the-road"

It's easy to let our fitness habits fall by the wayside when we're constantly on the move, but this year, let's make an effort to stay active. We can seek out local gyms or fitness classes, go for a run or hike in a new city, or even try a new outdoor activity like surfing or rock climbing.

"I resolve to be a language learner."

As digital nomads, we often find ourselves in countries where we don't speak the language. This year, let's make an effort to learn at least a few basic phrases in the local language. It'll come in handy when ordering food, asking for directions, or simply making conversation with locals.

Embrace local culture by going to a festival, like San Fermin in Spain

"I resolve to lean into the local culture"

There's so much to learn and discover when we're traveling the world, and as digital nomads, we have the unique opportunity to immerse ourselves in different cultures. This year, let's make an effort to learn about the history and customs of the places we visit. We can visit local museums and landmarks, attend cultural events, or simply strike up a conversation with locals and ask about their way of life.

"I resolve to be more budget conscious"

We often try to balance the desire to travel and see the world with the need to save money. This year, let's embrace our inner budget traveler and get creative with finding affordable accommodation, transportation, and activities. We can try couchsurfing, stay in budget hostels, or seek out local deals and discounts.

"I resolve to be a better planner."

As digital nomads, we often have to be spontaneous and go with the flow. But this year, let's make an effort to plan ahead and have a rough itinerary for our travels. It'll help us make the most of our time and budget, and it'll give us something to look forward to.

So there you have it, some fresh New Year's resolution ideas for frequent travelers and digital nomads. Whether you choose to embrace your inner beach bum, foodie, or culture junkie, remember to have fun and make the most of your travels in the new year. Happy nomading!
